About us

The Massachusetts Association of

Congregational Christian Churches

The MACCC is a group of likeminded congregations that have banded together for mutual fellowship, support, effective communication between the members, and information on mission and ministry opportunities.

As with all Congregational churches our member churches are free and independent. We invite any church/congregation that follows the Congregational Way to join our group and share in its bounty.

Congregationalism

A short history

The American Congregational story has its origins in 16th century England, and is still being written today, 5 centuries later! The Congregational Church was the church of the Pilgrims and of the Mass. Bay Colony Puritans, who were interested in establishing a Reformed tradition church state in the new world. After several generations, some churches changed to become Unitarian or Universalist churches. In 1931, the remaining Congregational Churches merged with the Christian Church movement to become Congregational-Christian churches. Then, in 1957, the majority of these churches dropped the Congregational-Christian name in another merger with the Evangelical & Reformed Church. A remaining minority formed a National Association of Congregational Christian Churches (NACCC). The MACCC as Massachusetts’ association of continuing Congregational Christian Churches, exists to allow local congregations to consult and advise together as churches upon matters of common concern to them, both temporal and spiritual, without infringing on their powers of self-government.

Congregational Beliefs

Congregationalist Christians, as represented by the National Association of Congregational Christian Churches (NACCC), hold a distinctive set of beliefs centered on the autonomy and freedom of the local church. They emphasize the importance of personal faith and the individual's direct relationship with God, without the need for hierarchical intermediaries. Each congregation governs itself and makes its own decisions, reflecting the democratic principles that underpin their faith. NACCC Congregationalists cherish the Bible as the foundation of their beliefs and practice, interpreting it through reason, tradition, and individual conscience. They value open and inclusive worship, the priesthood of all believers, and a commitment to social justice and community service. This approach allows for a diverse expression of faith, unified by a shared commitment to Christ and the fellowship of believers.
